Discomfort in the lower limbs such as burning sensation, pricking, tingling, whose intensity varies and whose sensations occur particularly during periods of relaxation or inactivity...chances are that you are suffering from the restless legs syndrome.

If it's the case, it can be very difficult for you to sit to attend a meeting, to travel by plane or to relax or sleep.

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?

RLS is a neurological disorder. 5 to 15% of the adult population suffer from RLS. In about half of the cases it appears before the age of 20 and is often confused with hyperactivity.

The "main cause" is unknown. It's a neurological disorder that is due to a lack of dopamine in the brain and the spinal cord.







Here Are Some Possible Causes:

  • An iron deficienct may impair the production of dopamine even if the deficiency is not serious ie which don't result in anemia
  • RLS may affect several generations of one family...so the hereditary component isn't negligible
  • Another cause may be a deficiency of magnesium , folic acid or vitamin B12
  • Pregnancy can be another cause. If the symptoms are present before, pregnancy can worsen them
  • A chronic disease such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, kidney failure, arthritis may contribute to the syndrome of restless legs

What Are The Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms?

  • Burning, itching, pain and tingling in your lower limb
  • Need to move your legs all the time
  • This need to move your legs appear or worsen when you're sitting or sleeping
  • Involuntary movements of the legs (less frequent; arms)
  • Because symptoms tend to worsen in the evening or at night, drowsiness is more difficult. RLS can lead to insomnia and can cause extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day.

    Sometimes it feels like you have walked all night!!!

Alcohol, caffeine, drugs, fatigue, stress, tobbacco may worsen symptoms.

Now that you know a little bit more what is restless leg syndrome I'm sure you wonder if there is a permanent treatment?

Sorry no...but you can help yourself by taking pure melatonin to help you sleep. A drug called "antiparkinsonian" (you guessed, for the Parkinson's disease) at low doses can help, drugs against pain....talk to your doctor

OR

FOR AN IMMEDIATE BUT TEMPORARY RELIEF YOU COULD TRY TO:

  • Self massage of your legs
  • Take a bath (hot water)
  • Apply heat and cold on the muscles, alternately
  • Move your legs, stretch your muscles, specially your calves. I do that before I go to bed and it helps me a lot!
